Does decluttering your home make you feel overwhelmed and unsure where to start?
That’s ok. I have been there too. Life gets overwhelming at times and goes by quickly. It’s easy to let that spare room fill up with junk from when you moved in 7 years ago and were going to “put some extra boxes in here until you find a spot for them” Now it’s hard to see the ground from years passing. You most likely have kids, work a job, and trying to keep up with the household chores alone is enough, let alone thinking of taking extra time to declutter. It might even feel laughable.
Any of those feelings or for the reason you clicked on this post? I know you feel overwhelmed, burnt out, and fed up. You know you can’t keep living like this and need to make some changes.
We’re going to learn some very simple steps on how to start to simplify and declutter when you have no idea where to even start. Let’s figure out how to eliminate overwhelm and stress by getting rid of excess pieces that are consuming your days which then in return consume your life.

Where to start?
The thought of “decluttering your home” can feel daunting and overwhelming in itself. I recommend starting somewhere simple that is not very meaningful to you. What I mean is somewhere that holds a lot of items you are not attached to.
Examples:
- bathroom
- junk drawer
- paperwork
- cleaning closet
This will help you get into the rhythm and process of decluttering before you jump into more challenging areas.
How To Start Decluttering:
After choosing an area to declutter. Follow these 4 simple rules
- Keep – make a pile of items you wish to keep.
- Donate -have another pile of items to donate or sell.
- Toss – this pile is self-explanatory 😉
- Home– the most important part of decluttering is the item you keep MUST have a home.
Tips:
Start with 5 – 10 minutes a day.
Get rid of duplicate items
Throw out any broken items
Check for expiration dates.
Keep the thought in the back of your mind. If this is an item you forgot you had, chances are you do not need it. Or If you haven’t used this item in the last 6-12 months, there’s most likely no reason to keep it.
Have a designated box or place in your home where you can place random items you wish to donate but aren’t cleaning out the closet and using the 4-step rule.
The process of decluttering and simplifying takes time. So, give yourself some grace. Tackle the junk drawer or somewhere easy at first. After you clear it out and have it organized/simplified. Pay attention to that feeling. It’ll feel good. Now imagine your busy life feeling like that.
You can create that. A simple and enjoyable life.
The process of living a minimal life is so rewarding and freeing. It’ll give you back peace and time you didn’t even know existed.
