Let’s start off by first learn identifying. What is the one-in, one-out decluttering rule?
The one-in, one-out declutter rule is for every item you bring into your home, you get rid of one item in its place.
Simplicity is about subtracting the obvious and adding the meaninful”
-John maeda
This is the main rule minimalists use on a routine basis. The one-in, one-out rule aims to help keep your home clutter free and prevent more clutter from accumulating.
Clutter is creepy. It’s VERY easy nowadays to let clutter slip into our home if we are not meaningful about new items we let into our home.
We live in a world that pushes sales, new items, styles, trends, etc. It’s easy to get caught up in the shiny new object syndrome (trust me, it happens to me sometimes) and not be intentional about the third Amazon box you’ve received this week.
WHAT ARE SOME BENEFITS OF THE ONE-IN, ONE-OUT RULE?
- This rule will help keep a balance of items in your home. You will become aware of the items your purchase and become more picky about what you bring into your home.
- Helps curb emotional buying. You become more conscious when your practice this rule. Which will ultimately make the one-in, one-out rule easy to follow.
- You will save money. When you’re more conscious about which item you choose to bring into your home. It’ll help you stop and think next time you see a sale. Asking yourself. “Do I really need this item?”
Here’s some easy example:
- New sneakers in, old pair of sneakers out.
- New water bottle in, old water bottle out.
- New jacket in, old jacket out.
- New wreath in, old wreath out.
You see. It’s actually very simple. It just takes some intentionality, which I’m sure if you are reading this blog post. You’re the type of person who is trying their best to live an intentional life and/or start trying.
With any new rule. Good things take time. Start practicing this method and you will realize over a period of time you will subconsciously be practicing this new method to maintain the home you have and limit clutter from creeping into your home.
