Over the past two years or so, I have simplified my kid’s clothes each year. Technically creating a “capsule wardrobe”. I never intentionally thought of it like this. But as I’m breaking down in this post the simple formula I use to buy my kids clothes. It’s technically considered a capsule wardrobe. I feel like a lot of people get thrown off by the term and feel as if creating a capsule wardrobe for your kids can be somewhat intimidating. Hence the numerous google searches like “how many pieces are in a capsule wardrobe”, “how to create a capsule wardrobe”, and “what is a capsule wardrobe”.
Here’s the thing. Let’s set aside the term capsule wardrobe and just focus on, how can you simplify the number of clothes your child has to make not only your life easier, but your child’s life easier as well.
Let’s look at some benefits of minimizing your child’s clothing.
- Increase the amount of closet & storage space
- Decrease outfit frustration & decision fatigue
- Decrease your expenses (spend less on buying clothes, detergents, water & electricity usage).
- Shopping for your kid’s clothes is easier
- Easier for your child to choose their outfits
- Less laundry
- Decreases overwhelm & anxiety in your child
- Boost child’s confidence
- ….and so many more numerous benefits. You can read a more in-depth explanation of the true benefits a capsule wardrobe has for your child here.
How A Capsule Wardrobe Will Benefit Your Child
HOW TO CREATE A CAPSULE WARDROBE
The first rule of thumb is to go through your child’s clothes. Before you purchase anything more, take inventory of what you have, and what you can eliminate and then it’ll become clear what you need to buy. 4 simple steps to start decluttering
CAPSULE WARDROBE DETAILS:
- TOPS
1-2 nice shirts (could be patterned), 4-6 neutral-colored shirts - BOTTOMS
1 pair jeans/1 pair leggings
4 shorts/1 pair jean shorts
1 skirt - DRESSES
2-4 dresses
1-2 rompers - OUTWEAR
1 sweater
1 light jacket (I prefer jean jacket-goes with most outfits) - Footwear
1 play sneaker/ 1 nice sneaker
1 play sandals/ 1 nice sandals - SWIM
1 swimsuit - SOCKS
6-8 pair (all white socks makes it easier on you + helps with matching outfits) - UNDERWEAR
8-10
Please note, these numbers are a ballpark range of items you should have for your child. Do not feel like you have to follow it perfectly. It’s all about creating a space that works for you and your child. Not because this “one blog post” said to do so.
WHERE TO SHOP?
Stick to 1-2 brands. There are many stores such as Old Navy, H&M, and even Wal+Mart that has plenty of neutral options to choose from.
PICK A COLOR PALETTE
Find the color palette you like or would look best on your child and try to stick to a color palette. It’ll make coordinating and matching outfits much easier. With the girls, I stick to neutrals and will then add in 1-2 floral patterns, etc.
Creating a capsule wardrobe for your child should be easy. Make sure you don’t lose sight of that. Establishing this process is so you can simplify your life and focus on what’s most important. Let it be easy.
